Leg Edema

Leg edema, or swelling in the legs, is a common reason for seeking medical attention. Various factors can contribute to leg swelling, including disorders in the following systems: veins, arteries, lymphatic vessels, heart, kidneys, thyroid, or the immune system. Additionally, certain medications, particularly antihypertensives (blood pressure medications), can lead to the development of leg edema. Often, multiple underlying causes contribute to swelling in the lower legs.

Treatment primarily depends on identifying the underlying cause of the swelling. Therefore, a thorough evaluation and accurate diagnosis of leg edema are crucial. This assessment should include an ultrasound ("duplex sonography") of the veins, an examination of the lymphatic system, and, if necessary, a cardiological evaluation.
