Lipedema

The term "lipedema" is somewhat misleading, as this condition does not primarily involve fluid-induced swelling of the extremities, like venous or lymphatic edema. Instead, it is characterized by a distinctive increase in fatty tissue in the limbs. Some literature prefers the term "lipohyperplasia dolorosa" to more accurately describe the pathological aspects of this condition.

Patients often experience pain, a tendency to bruise easily, and sometimes functional impairments. It’s crucial to differentiate lipedema from morbid obesity and other forms of leg edema during diagnosis. In some cases, lipedema may coexist with other types of leg swelling, such as venous or lymphatic edema.

Treatment typically includes compression therapy, with liposuction serving as a significant therapeutic option.
