Varicose Vein Bleeding
Smaller varicose veins, particularly the so-called "reticular" varices measuring a few millimeters in diameter, can be damaged by external injury. This is especially concerning for patients on blood-thinning medications, as it can lead to prolonged bleeding that doesn’t stop spontaneously. In the acute phase, treatment may involve surgical ligation and/or foam sclerotherapy of the affected vein.
To prevent recurrence, foam sclerotherapy is typically performed. It’s also important to assess for underlying venous insufficiency by conducting a detailed venous status examination. Eliminating surrounding varicose veins can reduce the pressure in the skin area, thereby decreasing the risk of new bleeding episodes.
